What grade do I need on the final?

grade needed x = (target − current average × (1 − p)) / p

p is the exam weight as a fraction (40% → 0.4). The first line is the definition of a two-part weighted average: what you already have (weight 1 − p) and what the exam will contribute (weight p). The second is the same equation solved for the exam grade. When p = 100%, everything rides on the exam and the grade you need is the target itself.

· the exam’s share of the final grade, set by your course syllabus. Coefficients, coursework percentages, etc. If your final “counts for 2 out of a total of 5 credits”, its weight is 2/5 = 40%.
Already secured
· the calculated grade needed is negative: even a zero on the exam leaves your final grade above the target.
Out of reach
· the grade needed exceeds the top of the scale: no exam performance is enough. The tool then shows the best final grade still possible.

Common pitfall: a good average protects you less than you thinkThe heavier the exam weighs, the more your current average (good or bad) fades away.

The heavier the exam weighs, the more your current average (good or bad) fades away. With a 78/100 average and a final worth 60%, aiming for 70 still requires 64.7: the 78 only covers 40% of the outcome. Conversely, a weak average recovers all the better when the final weighs a lot. The weight p decides everything; check it in the syllabus before calculating.
