A volumetric flow rate is the product of a mean velocity and a cross-section. At equal flow rate, narrowing a channel increases the velocity proportionally, which is why a few µL/min is enough to produce velocities of several mm/s in a microfluidic channel.

This converter handles volumetric flow rate only. Mass flow rate (kg/s, g/min) is a distinct quantity: going from one to the other requires the fluid density, a parameter this tool never assumes implicitly. For a gas the conversion further depends on temperature and pressure, which is why industrial flow meters use “normal liters” (Nm³/h), referred to explicitly stated reference conditions.
