Density is the ratio of a mass to a volume. The identity 1 kg/m³ = 1 g/L is not an approximation: it follows from the kilogram and cubic meter being scaled by a thousand in the same ratio as the gram and the liter.

Validity domain“Relative density” (or specific gravity) is the dimensionless ratio between the density of a substance and that of a reference.

“Relative density” (or specific gravity) is the dimensionless ratio between the density of a substance and that of a reference. Water at 4 °C for liquids and solids, air for gases. A relative density of 1.2 therefore corresponds to a density of 1200 kg/m³, but the two quantities do not share a dimension. This tool converts densities; it does not display relative density, which would depend on the chosen reference.
