Mass/volume percentage calculator (% w/v)

% w/v = 100 × m(g) / V(mL)

Calculate the mass/volume percentage (% w/v), the mass of solute or the final solution volume: x % w/v means x grams of solute per 100 mL of final solution.

Known quantities
Solute mass (m)
Solution volume (V)
Mass concentration (cₘ)

Method & formulas% w/v = 100 × m(g) / V(mL)

% w/v = 100 × m(g) / V(mL)

A mass/volume percentage of x % w/v means x grams of solute per 100 mL of final solution.

m
· mass of dissolved solute.
V
· final volume of the solution (solute + solvent).
% w/v
· grams of solute per 100 mL of solution.
Validity domainThe volume V is that of the final solution, obtained by topping up with solvent to the target volume.

The volume V is that of the final solution, obtained by topping up with solvent to the target volume. Not the volume of solvent added before dissolution. This unit says nothing about the nature of the solute: relating it to a molar concentration requires knowing its molar mass.

Example5 g of solute dissolved in a final volume of 100 mL gives a 5 % w/v solution (100 × 5 / 100 = 5).

5 g of solute dissolved in a final volume of 100 mL gives a 5 % w/v solution (100 × 5 / 100 = 5).
